Essence

I sat in a café on my lunch break and dialed Mona. I didn’t bother to say hello when she picked up. “You know I’m going to kill you right.” I reprimanded her as I sipped on my Arnold Palmer.

“What did I do?”

“Sending Echo to my house.”

“Who is Echo?”

“Don’t play with me.”

Mona laughed. “Oh, Echo. What about it? If you don’t answer your phone, then you get strangers sent to your house. You know I wasn’t going to call the police.”

“I cannot stand you. Anyways, you know I’m staying with her, right? I can’t begin to tell you how insane my life is right now. I don't recognize myself.”

“Wait… what? Did I miss something?”

“It’s kind of a long story, but yeah, I’ll be at her place for twenty-one days. You’ll never guess what happened.”

“Y’all slept together!” Mona yelled.

“What?! No! How is that the first place your mind went?”

“Oh, well what?” Mona responded with immediate disappointment.

“Tamar popped up.”

“What?! What did she have to say for herself? I better not see that mother--”

“Would you calm down and let me talk?”

“I’m listening,” she said reluctantly.

I sighed. “I hate that I love her so much, I swear. I kicked her out, but the moment I did, I wanted to let her right back in.”

“You better not. I promise I’ll disown you, E. Enough is enough.”

“Tell my heart that.”

“Put the bitch on the phone,” she joked and we both laughed. “I don’t even want to talk about Tamar. Give me more juice on that fine ass Echo.”

“I’m about to call your husband.”

She whispered. “You wouldn’t.”

“Would.” I laughed. “Echo is crazy. She told me I’m too perfect.”

“I think I have to agree with her.”

My mouth dropped. “Mona!”

“What? I’m just saying, girl. I thought women who went overboard with the weave and make-up were insecure. Sometimes I have to wonder if your perfect ass is insecure, too.”

“One, there is nothing wrong with weave or makeup. Most do it for themselves. Two, why would you say that?!”

“Because you try too hard to keep everything together, E. It’s okay to be a little messed up and vulnerable. Confidence thrives in the acceptance of imperfection. Nobody can use a flaw against you, if you don't see it as one.”

“I hate both of y’all.”

“No, you hate the truth. You own four pairs of jeans and a few t-shirts. Hell, I hate to shop with you because you’re always looking for work clothes as if there is nothing else in the world to do, but work. Relax and let go girl. I’m married and I have more fun than you.”

“Forget you. I’ve been thinking. You remember that meditation group, Temple Bodied, I started going to the first time Tamar and I broke up?”

“Yeah. What about it?”

“I’m going to start going back. I think it will help to center me. I need to take my energy back from Tamar. I linked the host a lot when I went. She didn’t focus solely on meditation. She was a lot like a life coach, teaching all of us about healing and health.
